Renewable Energy for Kids: Teaching Children About Renewable Energy

Many parents want their children to learn about renewable energy and energy efficiency in early life, because when they are accustomed to, it becomes a habit they continue to follow the rest of his life . But where to start when teaching renewable energy for kids?

A good start would be to define exactly what renewable energy. You can suggest they make a list of sources of non-renewable and renewable, and build from there. Here are some examples:

Not renewable / diesel, natural gas, coal and nuclear energy

Renewable energy: solar, wind, geothermal, electricity / water

Explain how renewable energy from natural forces. It differs from fossil fuels because it does not emit greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants. You can further refine how the mass production of electricity from renewable sources was only recently become more popular. Some of the reasons it is becoming more popular are: climate change caused by pollution and fossil fuel has already been used and becomes more expensive. A good idea is to teach children about energy efficiency. Give them a list of all powered devices they use for a day of television, computers, lights, etc., and for how long, and if possible watts for each device. If they can get watts, you can search the average watts for each device for demonstration purposes. Make a rough calcuation to show how much energy they use in one day. Now they make an “energy saving” the day they turn off appliances when not in use, turn off lights when not in a room down the heat / AC a few degrees, etc. Now calculate the watt daily and show them how much energy saved with simple changes. Another good idea is to show them how to install a solar panel or wind turbine can produce electricity for their own homes. It is not as expensive as you think. You do not need expensive commercial systems. You can build your own for $ 100-200 dollars and your children can also help if they are old enough. The less they take energy for granted, the better. These lessons will stick with them (especially at an impressionable age) and they will use these methods to the rest of his life. Teaching renewable energies for children, the sooner the better!
